Leyden Labs is a clinical-stage biotechnology company that is fundamentally changing how we protect people from airborne viruses. The goal is to provide unprecedented protection, right in the palm of the hand, for those who need it most. Our nasal sprays are built on decades of combined knowledge of mucosal biology and drug delivery innovation.
Our story
Dutch biotechnology company Leyden Labs was founded by the team that built Crucell into a global vaccine pioneer. Following Crucell's acquisition by Johnson & Johnson in 2011, its technology and expertise became a cornerstone of Janssen Vaccines. Following on that experience, Leyden Labs was established by renowned biotech leaders Dinko Valerio, Jaap Goudsmit, Ronald Brus, and Koenraad Wiedhaup.
Born out of the pandemic of 2020, Leyden Labs was founded on the belief that people deserved more adaptive, effective solutions than vaccines and social distancing. While the world raced to develop vaccines and antivirals against a novel virus, our founders reflected on a clear paradox: if airborne respiratory viruses enter through the nose, why are we protecting through the blood? There is an obvious mismatch between standard approaches to fighting respiratory viruses by delivering drugs systemically and what is known about transmission of airborne respiratory viruses. Our founders endeavored to establish the company around a completely different approach: administer broadly protective medicines directly to the respiratory mucosa where viruses invade.
Since 2020, the company has continued to grow, be inspired, and be joined by the expertise and insights of leaders and founders with shared goals: Linfa Wang, Anna Marie Pyle, Akiko Iwasaki, Kazuhiro Ito, Garth Rapeport, and Jag Shur.
